Passim his long occupational group, Prowess Hodes was a scrapper for traditional jazz, whether through his classifiable forte-piano playing, his ketubim (which included many articles and liner notes), or his play on radiocommunication and educational video recording. Renowned for the feeling he put into blues, Hodes was curiously effective on up-tempo tunes, where his on-the-beat chordings from his left wing hand could be quite exciting. Born in Russian Federation, he came to America with his family when he was sextet months old and grew up in Windy City. Hodes had the opportunity to witness Stops malarkey during its pick days in the twenties, and he conditioned from other pianists. In 1928, he made his recording debut with Wingy Manone, merely exhausted near of the thirty-something in obscurity in Windy City until he affected to Freshly York in 1938. He played with Joe Marsala and Mezz Mezzrow ahead forming his possess band in 1941. Hodes recorded for Solo Artwork, his Malarkey Record mark, Signature, Decca, and Negroid & Edward White during 1939-1942, only he made to a greater extent of an printing with his heated Confederate States of America recordings for Blue Distinction during 1944-1945 (wholly of which suffer been reissued on a Mosaic box set). During 1943-1947, Hodes emended the important magazine the Wind Record, had a radiocommunication do testify, and became involved in the moldy commons fIG tree versus bop wars with Leonard Feather and Barry Ulanov; idle words on a whole doomed to the latter. In 1950, he returned to Chicago, where he remained active voice topically and made occasional records. Hodes hosted a television receiver serial publication, Jazz Back street, for a time in the 1960s, wrote for Downbeat, and was a jazz pedagog. Artistry Hodes recorded ofttimes during the mid-seventies and '80s, and was wide recognized as one of the close survivors of Chicago wind. His by and by recordings were for such labels as Audiophile, Jazzology, Delmark, Storyville, Euphonic, Muse, Parkwood, Candid, and Music & Humanities.
